About The General Post Office
The original GPO was constructed from 1866 through to 1891 on Martin Place. Its signature clock tower had been demolished to protect Sydney from the WWII air raid in 1942, and was reconstructed in 1964. Until it was sold to private owners in 1996, the GPO experienced numerous extensions and renovations to function as the centre of Sydney and New South Wales’ postal systems. Since the GPO’s launch, the buildings in the surrounding area remodelled their architectural style to realise the historic beauty of Sydney.
